The Immigration Committee works out of the National Lawyers Guild, DC Chapter. The immigration committee meets about once a month to discuss/strategize about related issues—and reports about these issues at monthly NLG-DC Board meetings. The immigration committee conducts trainings/public education workshops in the D.C. Metro area about immigration policies and laws. It also provides legal assistance for non-citizens arrested during political demonstrations. Over the past two years, the immigration committee has engaged in a number of “Know Your Rights” trainings and panels related to post 9-11 civil liberties issues. Most recently, the immigration committee co-sponsored a “question and answer” session on post 9- 11 civil liberties at an area mosque. Speakers discussed ongoing policies that impact the Muslim community including special registration; immigration enforcement by state and local police; hate crimes; and detentions on immigration violations. Speakers included: Shoba Sivaprasad, National Lawyers Guild, National Immigration Forum; Benjamin Johnson, Immigration Policy Center; Jeanne Smoot, Tahirih Justice Center; Mujahid Idlibi, Council on American-Islamic Relations; and Paromita Shah, National Lawyers Guild, DC Chapter, Capital Area Immigrants Rights Coalition.

The Immigration Committee can be contact via email at immigration@dcnl.org.
